Nut-grass (nagarmotha)

Nagarmotha (Cyperus scariosus), widely known as Nut Grass or Cypriol, produces an exceptionally deep, complex attar oil. Derived from the steam distillation of the plant’s underground roots (rhizomes), it is highly prized in traditional south asian perfumery and modern high-end perfumery as a grounding base note.

Olfactory Profile

Nagarmotha attar has a robust, multi-layered scent profile. If you are familiar with Vetiver or Oud, you will find it lives in a similar sensory family:

 Primary Notes: Intensely woody, earthy, and root-like.

 Undertones: Richly spicy (similar to black pepper and cinnamon) with a distinct, smoky leathery finish.

 Nuance: As it dries down on the skin, a subtle, warm balsamic sweetness emerges, cutting through the initial heavy smokiness.

Aromatherapy Properties

Beyond perfumery, Nagarmotha is a staple in Ayurvedic practices. It is commonly used to support emotional balance, relieve stress, and promote a sense of grounded calmness due to its deep, earthy sedation qualities.
